The Korea Arts & Culture Education Service (ARKO) announced on the 1st that it will accept submissions for the 'ARKO Korean Creative Music Festival (Achangje)' until August 16.
Achangje is a creative music festival hosted by ARKO and the Korean Creative Music Festival Promotion Committee. It is a specialized project introduced by ARKO in 2007 to promote the composition, performance, and criticism of creative orchestral music encompassing both traditional Korean music (Gugak) and Western classical music. This year marks its 16th edition. In a Korean music market dominated by Western classical music, Achangje has played a pivotal role in fostering public interest in new compositions and motivating composers to create outstanding orchestral works. Over the past 15 years, a total of 171 works have been discovered through Achangje.
The 16th Achangje competition categories are ▲Gugak and ▲Western classical music. The competition targets orchestral or concerto works that are either premieres or revivals. For premieres, both preliminary and final rounds are conducted through blind judging. Composers holding Korean nationality who are active domestically or internationally, as well as foreign composers residing and working in Korea, are eligible to apply.
Works selected for Achangje will be performed on stage by leading domestic ensembles, with performance fees of 6 million KRW for premieres and 2 million KRW for revivals. The selected Gugak works for the 16th Achangje will be performed by the National Gugak Orchestra at the National Theater in January 2025, and the selected Western classical works will be performed by the National Symphony Orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center in February 2025.
