Geumcheon-gu Opens Nation's First Local Government-Operated 'Design Specialized Library'

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that on July 1, it will open the nation’s first design-specialized library operated by a local government, the ‘Geumcheon Gasan Public Design Small Library,’ in G Valley.

G Valley has a high proportion of startup companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which lack design professionals. When companies launch new products to the market, design is a crucial factor that determines the success or failure of the product.

The district promoted the opening of a design-specialized library to support design innovation for companies in G Valley.

The ‘Geumcheon Gasan Public Design Small Library’ is located in Seoul’s largest knowledge industry center, ‘Gasan Public (178 Digital-ro, Building A, Room M-401),’ and covers an area of 225.34㎡.

The library houses 1,800 titles of design specialized books, providing information on the latest trends and technologies in the design field. It operates dedicated spaces for design books divided into industrial design, general design, and architectural design areas, and plans to continuously supplement high-quality domestic and international design books reflecting the latest design trends.

In particular, it plans to focus on acquiring industrial design-related books to assist G Valley companies with new product designs.

The district aims to make the library a hub for the design community by linking with related organizations located in G Valley. The Korea Institute of Design Promotion Seoul Center is located in the same building, enabling synergy where companies can receive consulting from the institute and access related materials at the library.

Additionally, the district plans to organize gatherings centered on design experts and run programs to provide opportunities for design industry workers to communicate and develop together.

Various events and programs will be operated to revitalize the library. Design experience programs and design culture programs led by experts will be offered to help residents easily engage with design.

To allow local residents and G Valley workers to enjoy a reading culture, 3,000 general books are also available. The district plans to develop the library into a design information library that allows users to access materials without visiting in person by utilizing an online platform in the future.

The library operates from Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and is closed on weekends and public holidays. Design books can only be read on-site and cannot be borrowed. General books can be both read on-site and borrowed, with a limit of 10 books per loan for up to 14 days.

Meanwhile, the library plans to introduce bookplates (markers indicating book ownership) for the first time in a public small library. The bookplates are designed by combining the latest artificial intelligence (AI) technology with designers’ creativity to create a timeless design that does not go out of style.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Through the Geumcheon Gasan Public Design Small Library, we will secure Geumcheon-gu’s unique design competitiveness,” and added, “We will spare no support to revitalize the design library.”
