Changes Coming in the Second Half of 2024
Starting next month, navigation systems will alert drivers when they approach flood warning issuance points or dam (37 dams managed by the Ministry of Environment) discharge points.
The government announced on the 30th that it will implement a flood information service from July to help citizens easily understand flood risk situations and quickly evacuate from dangerous areas.
When entering flood warning issuance points, navigation systems will provide a safety driving prompt such as "This area is under a flood warning. Please drive safely." Additionally, during flood advisories and flood warnings, mobile phone location information will be used to send safety guidance messages confirming the user's location and providing information about nearby flood-prone areas.
◆ Nationwide Expansion of Early High-Concentration Fine Dust Forecasts
To prevent health damage to the public and strengthen fine dust response capabilities, high-concentration fine dust forecasts 36 hours in advance will be expanded nationwide.
Currently, 36-hour advance high-concentration fine dust forecasts are provided for the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong region, and Honam region. Starting November this year, the service will be expanded to include Gangwon, Yeongnam, and Jeju regions, providing coverage nationwide.
◆ Detailed Weather Information Provided Until the 5th Day
Hourly weather information will be extended from 4 days to up to 5 days. Weather information for the 5th day, which was previously provided in morning and afternoon units, will be subdivided into 3-hour units starting November 2024.
Considering forecast variability and the purposes of using meteorological information, the units and elements of weather information provision will also be differentiated. For snow and rain forecasts, which greatly affect citizens' daily lives, both quantitative expected precipitation and snowfall amounts as well as qualitative information will be provided to enhance public understanding and perception.
For the most frequently used period, from today to the 4th day, information will be provided in 1-hour units, and to minimize uncertainty for the final 5th day weather information, it will be provided in 3-hour units.
