Seoul Drops Compared to Last Year, Busan Maintains Ranking

The capital of Austria, Vienna, has been ranked the 'Most Livable City in the World' for the third consecutive year.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), an economic analysis agency under the British weekly news magazine The Economist, announced the list of the 'Most Livable Cities in the World' on the 26th (local time).

A total of 173 cities worldwide were evaluated based on criteria such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

As a result, Vienna ranked first with an average score of 98.4. It received a perfect score (100 points) in all categories except for culture and environment. However, due to a lack of sports events, the culture and environment category scored 93.5 points.

Copenhagen, Denmark, took second place with 98.0 points, followed by Zurich, Switzerland (97.1 points), and Melbourne, Australia (97.0 points). Calgary, Canada, and Geneva, Switzerland tied for fifth place (each with 96.8 points), Sydney, Australia, and Vancouver, Canada tied for seventh place (each with 96.6 points), and Osaka, Japan, and Auckland, New Zealand tied for ninth place (each with 96.0 points), making up the top 10.

In Asia, Osaka, ranked ninth globally, was the highest-ranked city, followed by Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Seoul and Busan scored in the high 80s, ranking fifth and sixth in Asia respectively. Seoul dropped one rank compared to last year, while Busan maintained its position.

The least livable city in the world was Damascus, the capital of Syria, with a score of 30.7. Destroyed by civil war, Damascus has remained at the bottom since 2013. Following it were Tripoli, Libya; Algiers, Algeria; Lagos, Nigeria; and Karachi, Pakistan, which all ranked low.

Cities in countries at war received low scores in the stability category. Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, ranked 165th, placing it in the bottom 10, while Tel Aviv, Israel, dropped 20 places from last year to 112th, showing the largest change in this year's survey.
