Seongdong-gu Clarifies Report Claiming Only 39% Installation Rate of Flood Barriers for Flood-Prone Households (Semi-Basement) in Seoul and Seongdong-gu as of 28th, Falling Short of Half
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced on the 28th that it ranks first among the 25 autonomous districts in Seoul in the installation performance of flood barriers managed weekly by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
This is a rebuttal to the statement made based on data analyzed and released on the 28th by Assemblyman Seo Wang-jin of the Party for National Innovation, who received the data from Seoul City. According to the data, the installation rate of flood barriers in households at risk of flooding in Seoul is 61%. However, when looking at the status by district, Jung-gu is at 20%, Seongdong-gu at 39%, and Dongjak-gu at 49%, which is less than half, was stated.
Seongdong-gu reported that the number of flood barrier installation requests was 361, of which 142 were completed, and a full on-site survey was conducted for the remaining 219 households. The on-site survey results showed that 103 households were located in terrain such as highlands or slopes, 92 households had no water inflow due to building structure (windows and doors at least 40cm above ground level), and 24 households were underground units, thus judged to be households where flood barrier installation was unnecessary.
Accordingly, Seongdong-gu reported this information to Seoul City on March 7 of this year, and Seoul City reflected this information in the weekly managed installation performance of flood barriers by autonomous districts, emphasizing that Seongdong-gu ranks first in installation performance among the 25 autonomous districts.
Meanwhile, Seoul City added that it appears that the data submitted at the time of Assemblyman Seo Wang-jin’s request did not reflect such implementation results.
Seongdong-gu stated that through its own full survey of a total of 4,777 households, it completed installation in 1,236 households judged to require flood barriers, and is conducting a re-inspection survey on all flood barriers installed in local houses throughout June.
