[2024 LTAS] Successful Conclusion of the ‘Legal Tech AI Special Exhibition’ Hosted by Beopryul Sinmun

The '2024 Legal Tech AI Special Exhibition (LTAS, Legal Tech & AI Show)' hosted by Beopryul Newspaper successfully concluded on the 28th.


This special exhibition provided an opportunity to observe the present and future of domestic legal tech and generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Co-hosted by Beopryul Newspaper and Messe Isang, the event was held for three days from the 26th to the 28th at COEX Hall A in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The event featured keynote speeches and special lectures by AI policy leaders from the courts and prosecution, as well as Judge James E. Baker (Director of the U.S. Institute for Security Policy and Professor at Syracuse University College of Law), recognized as the top authority on AI law in the U.S. legal community; Kang Min-gu, CEO of Law Firm Doul and former Chief Judge of the Seoul High Court, regarded as the leading AI authority within the judiciary; and Lee Moon-han, Commissioner of the Personal Information Protection Commission.


Alongside them, representatives and research directors from leading domestic legal tech companies such as Law&Company, Law&Good, Lawporm, LBox, Intellicon, Douzone Bizon, Hanbit Solutions, BHSN, and LexisNexis gave lectures on various topics related to legal AI. An AI special pavilion was also set up within the venue, where attendees could experience the latest products developed by these companies.


In the afternoon, the launch ceremony of the 'Legal Tech & AI Forum' was held. The ceremony was attended by Lee Sung-yeop, President of the Korean Data Law Policy Association; Lee Ki-soo, Director of the Korean Law Academy; and Lee Soo-hyung, CEO of Beopryul Newspaper, who congratulated the forum's inauguration.


In his opening remarks, Lee Sung-yeop, President of the Korean Data Law Policy Association, stated, “We recognized the need for specialized research on the changes brought by legal tech and AI and the legal market's response, as well as the sharing of research outcomes. Therefore, we formed the forum centered on experts from academia, the legal profession, and the legal tech industry and held the first inaugural academic conference.” He added, “AI will not only tremendously enhance the productivity of legal professionals but also dramatically improve legal consumers' access to the judicial system.”

In the subsequent congratulatory speech, Lee Ki-soo, Director of the Korean Law Academy, said, “Major countries, mainly the U.S. and Europe, are enjoying economic benefits such as automation of legal services, cost reduction, and improved accessibility through legal tech and AI.” He continued, “These changes lead to the expansion of the legal market and the creation of new business models.” He added, “Given the great public benefit and future growth potential, I hope today’s forum will be a place for in-depth discussions on the development direction of legal tech and AI.”


In his welcoming address, Lee Soo-hyung, CEO of Beopryul Newspaper, said, “The power of AI seems comparable to that of the carriage, airplane, and perhaps even satellites.” He added, “AI has already become a decisive factor determining life and death in our economic and technological wars.” He also mentioned, “To solve the judiciary’s most serious problem of trial delays, the Judge Increase Act is currently under discussion.” He emphasized, “A paradigm shift is needed, such as allocating the budget for increasing judges to the judiciary’s AI budget.”


At the inaugural academic conference seminar that followed, Kang Hyung-gu, President of the Korean Financial Management Association, presented on “The Economic Effects of Legal Tech (Focusing on Overseas Data).” Professor Jung Hye-ryeon of the Police University’s Department of Law spoke on “U.S. Legal Tech Regulations and Related Legislation.” Professor Jeon Sung-min of Gachon University’s Department of Business Administration discussed “Exploring Business Model Diversity in the Legal Tech Field.” Lee Byung-jun, Director of the Legal Tech Center at Korea University Law Research Institute, presented on “The Potential of Domestic Legal Tech and Future Legislative Policy Directions.” Subsequently, representatives from academia, the legal profession, and industry participating in the forum engaged in a comprehensive discussion on “The Discourse on Coexistence between Legal Tech and the Legal Profession,” marking the conclusion of the event.
