Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, announced that it is “smoothly resolving” the issue of household waste collection at the high-rise mixed-use building in Cheomdan in cooperation with businesses and residents.
According to Gwangsan-gu on the 28th, a housing construction project approval plan for a mixed-use building located in Ssangam-dong, Cheomdan, was submitted in December 2019.
During the plan approval process, Gwangsan-gu provided guidance on the types and quantities of collection bins required for household waste storage facilities in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
The design firm, considering the characteristics of the mixed-use building, independently allocated the household waste storage facility on the 4th basement floor, and the construction company built the building according to the design drawings.
However, during the housing use inspection in April 2024, it was confirmed that there was no designated place for disposing of waste accessible to cleaning vehicles.
Accordingly, based on the “Ordinance on the Management of Household Waste,” Gwangsan-gu requested that “the facility on the 4th basement floor is a space for storing waste separately by type for sorting purposes, and for smooth collection, waste should be disposed of on the ground floor.”
The prospective residents strongly demanded that waste collection be conducted from the storage facility, citing difficulties in securing a separate space on the ground floor, as well as concerns about the building’s aesthetics and hygiene. However, the 5-ton cleaning vehicle responsible for collecting waste in the area cannot enter the 4th basement floor, and Gwangsan-gu does not possess cleaning vehicles capable of accessing the 4th basement floor, making it difficult to find a solution.
To resolve the issue, Gwangsan-gu held more than ten residents’ meetings and interviews with construction stakeholders to gather opinions and worked hard to secure alternatives.
In particular, on April 26, Park Byung-gyu, Mayor of Gwangsan-gu, met with about 80 prospective residents of the mixed-use building at the Cheomdan Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, listened to their inconveniences and suggestions regarding waste collection, and promised to resolve the issue to enable “collection on the 4th basement floor.”
Through this process, Gwangsan-gu secured a 3.5-ton cleaning vehicle and found a breakthrough, and is now promoting “collection on the 4th basement floor” to solve the waste collection problem at the mixed-use building.
A Gwangsan-gu official said, “We will continue to actively listen to citizens’ opinions and improve the household waste collection system to enhance efficiency so that there will be no inconvenience in citizens’ daily lives.”
