Kang Min-su, a seasoned tax official who has held key positions at the National Tax Service (NTS), has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the NTS.
On the 27th, President Yoon Suk-yeol nominated Kang as the 26th Commissioner of the NTS. The Blue House explained the nomination by stating that Kang is "the right person to steadily carry out the NTS’s major tasks based on his extensive experience in overall tax policy and outstanding communication skills."
Originally from Changwon, Gyeongnam, Kang graduated from Busan Dongnae High School, then earned a degree in Business Administration and a graduate degree in Public Administration from Seoul National University, followed by a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Birmingham in the UK. He entered public service in 1994 after passing the 37th Administrative Examination. He is a classmate of the current NTS Commissioner Kim Chang-gi.
Kang has accumulated diverse experience, serving as Director of the Investigation Division 1 at the Busan Regional Tax Office, Director of the Investigation Division 3 at the Seoul Regional Tax Office, Director of IT Management and Planning Coordination at the NTS headquarters, Director of the Tax Collection and Legal Affairs Bureau, and Director of the Corporate Taxation Bureau. He also served as a standing judge at the Tax Tribunal. Recently, he worked as Commissioner of the Daejeon Regional Tax Office and the Seoul Regional Tax Office.
Although the Commissioner of the NTS holds a vice-ministerial rank, the position is classified as one of the four key power agency heads alongside the Director of the National Intelligence Service, the Prosecutor General, and the Commissioner of the National Police Agency, and thus requires a confirmation hearing in the National Assembly.
Regarding his nomination, Kang said, "Despite many shortcomings, I feel a heavy sense of responsibility upon being nominated as the Commissioner of the NTS. I will deeply consider the role of the NTS and the direction of national tax administration while preparing sincerely for the confirmation hearing."
Meanwhile, Kang reported assets worth 3.87285 billion KRW in March. He owns an apartment in Seobinggo-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, jointly registered with his spouse, valued at 1.932 billion KRW, and deposits totaling 1.93955 billion KRW, among other assets.
