Gwanak-gu, Creation of a Riverside Sensory City from Byeolbitnaerimcheon to Bongcheoncheon Ecological Stream Restoration Perspective of Bongcheoncheon, Gwanak-gu

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) held a kickoff briefing on the 27th for the "Establishment of Management Plans to Revitalize Waterfront Spaces" project to restore Bongcheoncheon, a covered stream, into an ecological stream and to enable residents to conveniently use the waterfront area.

At the meeting, the Gwanak-gu mayor, related officials, and experts (urban planning, transportation) attended to share the current status of the project and future plans.

Bongcheoncheon is a covered stream originating from Gwanaksan Mountain and merging with Dorimcheon. The district is promoting an ecological stream restoration project to create a new resting space within the urban area and restore the stream’s original function. The first phase of the restoration project covers the section from Danggok Intersection to the confluence with Byeolbitnaerincheon (Dorimcheon), scheduled to begin construction in 2029.

Accordingly, the district determined that a management plan is necessary to revitalize and maintain the surrounding area of the restoration project. The project targets the 500m above-ground area on both banks of the ecological stream restoration section of Bongcheoncheon [from the confluence with Byeolbitnaerincheon (Dorimcheon) to Wondang Elementary School, length = 3.5 km].

Additionally, 54 members of the "Premium City Design Resident Participation Group," who have been involved in shaping Gwanak’s urban future, will participate in this plan formulation to provide opinions for the district’s development and promote growth.

The resident participation group derived five future visions for Gwanak desired by residents: ▲The days of hillside villages are over, beautiful I-eumcheon ▲A resting place for those who breathe with joy in body and mind ▲Gwanak-gu dreaming of the future, revitalizing the economy, and happiness ▲Healing Bongcheoncheon where nature and ecology breathe life ▲A premium Gwanak where nature and people coexist.

The district plans to draft the blueprint for the future waterfront space of Gwanak-gu reflecting residents’ opinions, complete an actionable plan through expert consultation in various fields, and coordination with related departments.

Furthermore, the district will prepare a linkage plan with Byeolbitnaerincheon to present new guidelines for Gwanak-gu’s waterfront spaces.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “Through this ‘Establishment of Management Plans to Revitalize Waterfront Spaces,’ we expect to create a distinctive space unique to Bongcheoncheon, making it a landmark in Gwanak that residents can easily and conveniently use.” He added, “We will continue to strive to create a clean and sustainable city through ecological stream restoration and the provision of waterfront spaces.”
