"Children Are Getting Sick"... Raising Awareness of the Dangers of Secondhand Smoke
Goryeong County, North Gyeongsang Province (Governor Lee Namcheol), in collaboration with the National Smoking Cessation Support Center of the Korea Health Promotion Institute, conducted a smoking hazard prevention education program for approximately 140 children from local daycare centers and kindergartens at the Goryeong County Public Health Center on the 26th.
The mobile smoking hazard prevention class for young children was implemented to instill proper awareness of the dangers of tobacco and the risks of secondhand smoke, as well as to promote early prevention of smoking during the growth period and foster healthy lifestyle habits.
This educational program was based on the original fairy tale "Nodam Band and Friends," which was created to suit the developmental level of children aged 3 to 5. The program included storytelling, physical and experiential activities, and was accompanied by activities designed to link education with the home environment.
Kim Gonsu, head of the public health center, said, "We hope that by recognizing the dangers of smoking from early childhood, when cognitive abilities are being formed, children will be able to actively help and support their family members in quitting smoking."
