Jongno-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) announced on the 26th that it will install LED security lights upgrades and two-way smart security lights at 450 locations in the areas of Gyo-nam-dong and Sungin 2-dong by December this year.
The smart security lights automatically brighten the lighting level when pedestrians who have downloaded the Ansim-i (Safety) application on their mobile phones and activated the safe return monitoring service pass near the security lights, illuminating the night path brightly.
In case of an accident or emergency, users can immediately report to the Jongno-gu Integrated Control Center via the app, and the security lights around the reporter will blink, allowing responding police officers to quickly identify the location. Additionally, the security light management department monitors the lights continuously via PC and mobile phones, enabling prompt repairs if a security light malfunctions, minimizing inconvenience to residents.
Furthermore, during late-night hours from 11 PM to 5 AM, the brightness of the security lights is reduced to 50-80% of the maximum brightness to save energy and prevent light pollution. In 2022, Jongno-gu installed smart security lights at 271 locations in Gahoe-dong, including Bukchon Hanok Village, and last year, 466 locations in Hyehwa-dong, including Seonggyungwan-ro 5-gil and Myeongnyun-gil.
District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, “We plan to expand this project focusing on areas where the need to strengthen crime prevention is prioritized, such as neighborhoods with a high concentration of single-person households.”
