Geumcheon-gu Holds Academic Conference Discussing Past and Future of Silla-era Military Stronghold 'Hoamsanseong'

Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) announced that it will hold the ‘Hoamsanseong Academic Conference’ on June 28 at 1 PM in the district office auditorium, with 300 participants including residents and researchers.

This academic conference, involving experts from various fields, was organized to share the excavation results of ‘Hoamsanseong’ to date and to discuss future maintenance and utilization plans.

‘Hoamsanseong,’ the only nationally designated cultural heritage site in the district, is located on Hoamsan Mountain (elevation 347m), the main mountain of the district, and served to defend the southwestern area of Seoul. It is a stone fortress with a circumference of 1,547 meters and an area of approximately 133,924 square meters, believed to have been built during the Silla period, serving as a military strategic point and also used as an administrative institution.

The academic conference is co-hosted by the Hangang Cultural Heritage Research Institute (Director Shin Suk-jung) and the Korean Fortress Society (President Jeong Ui-do), and will be held under the theme ‘Seoul Hoamsanseong, Its Journey and Leap.’

Following the keynote speech by Professor Choi Jong-taek of Korea University on ‘The Journey of Excavations at Hoamsanseong and Hanwumul,’ presentations on four subtopics and a comprehensive discussion will follow.

The four subtopics are ‘Excavation Results of Hoamsanseong Fortress Wall and the Second Well Site,’ ‘Review of Artifacts Excavated from the Second Well Site of Hoamsanseong,’ ‘Historical Value and Significance of Hoamsanseong,’ and ‘Maintenance and Utilization Plans for Hoamsanseong.’ University professors and cultural heritage researchers will each present for 25 minutes on their respective topics.

Afterward, a 90-minute comprehensive discussion will be held, chaired by Jeong Ui-do, President of the Korean Fortress Society, with panelists including Hwang Bo-kyung, Director of Sejong University Museum; Professor Choi Tae-seon of Joongang Seungga University; Professor Park Seong-hyun of Seoul National University; and Professor Shin Hee-gwon of the University of Seoul.

Based on the contents discussed at this academic conference, the district plans to reestablish the ‘Hoamsanseong Comprehensive Maintenance Basic Plan,’ originally formulated in 2014, in the second half of this year and accelerate excavation and restoration efforts of Hoamsanseong.

Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Through this academic conference, we aim to reexamine the historical value and significance of Hoamsanseong,” adding, “We will do our best to systematically preserve and allow enjoyment of Seoul Hoamsanseong, a precious cultural heritage located in Geumcheon-gu.”

The district began excavations of Hoamsanseong in the 1980s, restored the first well site ‘Hanwumul,’ and Hoamsanseong was elevated to a nationally designated cultural heritage site (formerly National Historic Site No. 43). Recently, excavation of the second well site has been completed, and excavation of buildings around the well site is underway.
