Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the People Power Party, who has taken responsibility for the organization of the National Assembly and expressed his intention to resign, is reported to go into seclusion on Baengnyeongdo Island in Incheon for the time being, as of the 25th. Within the People Power Party, there is a sentiment that Choo should not step down, and a vote of confidence is expected to be discussed at the party meeting on the 27th.
According to the ruling party on the 25th, Choo Kyung-ho stayed at Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa-do, Incheon the previous day and visited Baengnyeongdo Island on the morning of the 25th. On this day, marking the 74th anniversary of the Korean War, Choo paid respects at the memorial tower for the 46 soldiers of the Cheonan ship and visited the 6th Marine Brigade to listen to their difficulties.
Earlier, the People Power Party decided at a party meeting the previous day to take the seven standing committee chair positions left by the Democratic Party, and Choo expressed his intention to resign, taking responsibility for the negotiation of the National Assembly organization. Although many ruling party lawmakers urged him not to resign, Choo’s determination was reported to be firm.
However, the People Power Party is expected to discuss the issue of Choo’s vote of confidence at the party meeting to be held on the 27th to elect the vice speaker of the National Assembly and standing committee chair candidates. The three-term lawmakers held an emergency meeting the previous day and concluded that Choo’s resignation is unacceptable.
Hwang Woo-yeo, the emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party, also met with Hong Joon-pyo, mayor of Daegu, at the Sanggyeok office of Daegu City Hall on the same day and told reporters, "Although he (former floor leader Choo) resigned taking heavy responsibility, he should be reappointed," adding, "If the floor leader changes, the stability of the next party leader will also be affected."
