HD Hyundai Leads Ship Cybersecurity Technology Development

HD Hyundai has become the first in Korea to complete basic certification for ship cyber security technology from the world's six major classification societies.

On the 25th, HD Hyundai announced that it recently obtained basic certification (AiP) for cyber resilience (IACS UR E26) technology of LNG FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) from Lloyd's Register (LR) and ClassNK, completing certification from the world's six major classification societies.

Previously, starting with the Korean Register (KR) in May last year, HD Hyundai had acquired basic certification for the 'Ship Cyber Resilience Technology Procedures and Methodology' from four classification societies: Bureau Veritas (BV) of France, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of Norway, and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The six major classification societies (DNV, ABS, ClassNK, LR, BV, KR) are members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), which establishes international standards related to ship inspection and certification, exerting absolute influence on the shipbuilding and shipping industries.

Ship cyber resilience refers to technology that not only protects ships from cyber threats but also minimizes damage from information security incidents that have already occurred, thereby enhancing the operational safety of ships.

As various systems on ships are integrated and digitalization expands, threats from security attacks such as hacking and ransomware are increasing, making the importance of cyber resilience emphasized worldwide.

The International Association of Classification Societies has also mandated that all shipbuilding contracts signed after July this year must secure cyber resilience technology.

In response, HD Hyundai has been conducting joint development projects with global classification societies since last year, designing cyber resilience networks and completing the establishment of response systems.

An HD Hyundai official said, "Stronger cyber security technology is required for the operational safety of digitalized ships," adding, "HD Hyundai plans to maintain its status as the world's top shipbuilder with the highest level of cyber security technology."

Meanwhile, through its comprehensive marine solutions company HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, HD Hyundai has launched the ship cyber security solution brand 'Hi-Secure' and is leading ship cyber security technology by applying it to LNG FSRUs currently under construction.
