Park Hong-ryul, the mayor of Mokpo, has launched an all-out effort to secure national funding for the next year.
According to the city on the 25th, on the 24th, Mayor Park Hong-ryul held a meeting with Kim Dong-il, Director of the Budget Office at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and other officials. At this meeting, Mayor Park explained the major pending projects of Mokpo and the necessity of government financial support, requesting national funding assistance.
He also held a meeting with Han Soon-gi, Director of the Fiscal and Economic Office at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, to propose support for special grants, including the replacement work of soundproof panels at Yang-eulsan Tunnel.
The major pending projects requested by Mokpo City include the creation of a complex cultural space at the old Suhyup Wholesale Market, designation of Sapjin Port as a national fishing port and basic survey and design, support for equipment to operate the International Dried Seaweed Exchange, and establishment of an operational foundation for a specialized seaweed industry institution.

Along with this, the city also requested full reflection of the budget amount for the installation project of the Mokpo area resource recovery (incineration) facility. These projects are known to play an important role in regional development and sustainable growth.
The project to create a complex cultural space at the old Suhyup Wholesale Market is an important initiative to prevent hollowing out caused by the relocation of the North Port and to revive the local commercial district, with plans to strengthen infrastructure through national funding support.
The designation of Sapjin Port as a national fishing port and the basic survey and design project is a crucial project to prepare for the increasing demand for vessels at Sapjin Port, with a proposal to include design costs.
Additionally, the support project for operating equipment at the International Dried Seaweed Exchange is gaining importance as a project to strengthen the role of the largest dried seaweed trading hub in the country.
Mayor Park Hong-ryul emphasized, “Mokpo’s pending projects are important at the national level as well, and supporting them will contribute to both regional and national development.”
Meanwhile, the city has secured 826.7 billion won in the 2024 government budget, including ongoing projects and large-scale national projects.
