Gwangju Seo-gu Council Strongly Urges Inclusion of the '5·18 Spirit' in the Constitutional Preamble

The Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council announced the 'Resolution Urging the Inclusion of the May 18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution,' which was proposed by Representative Im Seong-hwa, at the 3rd plenary session of the 1st regular meeting of the 322nd session on the 25th.

Representative Im stated, "According to the May 18 Awareness Survey conducted by the May 18 Memorial Foundation, 69.6% of respondents actively agree with the inclusion in the constitutional preamble," emphasizing, "The inclusion of the May Spirit in the Constitution is a mandate from the people and a mission of our times."

Furthermore, Representative Im remarked that although a national consensus has been formed regarding the historical facts of May 18, distortion and disparagement continue to be repeated, and the way to end this vicious cycle is to enshrine the May 18 Spirit in the constitutional preamble.

Despite this, Representative Im criticized, "Discussions on including the May Spirit in the Constitution have been raised since the 9th constitutional amendment after the June Struggle in 1984, but have remained stagnant for nearly 40 years without any progress."

As President Yoon Seok-yeol's pledge and the leaders of both ruling and opposition parties in the 22nd general election have also actively supported the inclusion, the council strongly urged the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and the 22nd National Assembly to immediately begin constitutional amendments to include the May Spirit in the Constitution.
