Gangbuk-gu, Plans to Establish Disaster Waste Disposal Measures for 2024 Underway

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) announced that it will implement the "2024 Disaster Waste Management Plan" to promptly handle disaster waste generated from various disasters such as typhoons, heavy rains, and large-scale fires.

The 2024 disaster waste management plan of Gangbuk-gu aims to support rapid disaster recovery to ensure residents' safety and hygiene. The district has established measures to efficiently collect and transport disaster waste by mobilizing all available personnel and equipment to minimize inconvenience to residents.

In the event of a disaster, the district plans to promptly handle disaster waste by mobilizing a total of 254 personnel, including 20 administrative staff, 27 drivers, 84 environmental officers, and 123 cleaning contractors, as well as 129 pieces of equipment, including 15 dump trucks, 7 arm roll trucks, 2 bulldozers, 5 street sweepers, and 77 contractor vehicles.

First, the district formed an on-site inspection team to quickly assess the amount of waste generated. Depending on the type and volume of waste at the disaster site, a phased plan will be implemented to mobilize personnel and equipment. The first cleaning phase involves street sweepers and water trucks, followed by a second phase of manual residual waste cleaning by environmental officers and others.

The collected disaster waste will be swiftly transported to the primary transfer station, Ohhyeon Transfer Station, then to the secondary Gangbuk-gu Recycling Sorting Center, where it will be separated into recyclables, waste soil, wood materials, and non-acceptable waste for proper processing. The district has also secured a tertiary transfer site in case additional transfer stations are needed.

Additionally, to ensure rapid collection and transportation, cooperative systems have been established with fire stations, police stations, military units, and private organizations.

Meanwhile, the district is operating a system for the rapid collection and disposal of household waste during the summer. Cleaning task forces and mobile cleaning teams have been organized to operate ▲ street mobile teams for flood prevention ▲ complaint response teams for patrolling vulnerable areas and handling cleaning complaints ▲ and mobile garbage collection teams to prevent odor and hygiene issues caused by residual summer waste.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, stated, "As abnormal weather intensifies this year with frequent heavy rains and typhoons expected, we will do our utmost to secure residents' safety by operating a proactive and strengthened disaster response system."
