As part of the Pungnap-dong Residential Environment Improvement Project, transformed into a pleasant shopping destination combining comfort and local characteristics
Secured 300 million KRW in city funds...Improvement of sales stands in 160 stores by September, replacement of signs and awnings planned within the year
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) is promoting the ‘Pungnap Market Stall Improvement Project’ to revitalize the Pungnap-dong commercial district, which has been stagnant due to a long-term cultural heritage preservation project, by renovating the exteriors of 160 old stores by September.
Pungnap Market is a permanent traditional market stretching about 300 meters along Baramdri-gil, included in the ‘Pungnap Fortress Cultural Heritage Protection Zone.’ It has been loved by local residents for its affordable prices and delicious food, but recently it has faced a double hardship due to a decrease in visitors caused by resident relocation and a shrinking commercial district due to an increase in compensated stores.
Accordingly, the district secured 300 million KRW in city funds and began modernizing Pungnap Market. To break the perception that traditional markets are inconvenient, the district explained that they will renovate old facilities and refurbish store facades to provide a pleasant environment and a convenient shopping experience.
In particular, an integrated design reflecting the identity of the Pungnap-dong area, marked by ‘Hanseong Baekje,’ will be applied to create a distinctive market atmosphere. Traditional patterns and signage systems will be applied to stalls, signboards, and awnings to transform the space into a beautiful and unified environment.
First, by September, 160 store stalls will be replaced with new designs. This will improve product visibility by replacing old stalls of varying heights and shapes, and solve hygiene issues for stores that previously displayed goods in baskets or boxes without stalls. Stores that do not require stalls will receive customized support such as deck installation and entrance facade improvements without omission.
Additionally, light panels (signboards) that allow shoppers to easily grasp store information will be introduced. Items handled, menus, payment methods, and more will be displayed in a consistent format at each store entrance, enhancing shopping convenience for visitors.
The district plans to start improving awnings and signboards as soon as the stall replacements are completed, aiming to finish the modernization project of Pungnap Market facilities by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, in May, the district newly created 23 shared parking spaces on seven lots including 141-1 Pungnap-dong to improve parking convenience for market users. The newly established parking lot, located right in front of Pungnap Market, is available to anyone at an affordable rate of 600 KRW per 30 minutes.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “I hope that with this stall improvement, Pungnap Market, which has struggled for a long time due to being tied to the cultural heritage protection zone, will regain its original vitality,” and added, “We will continue to carry out various projects to improve the quality of life for market merchants and residents.”
