The First Step in Korean Traditional Music Creative Chamber Performance! This Year's 'Joyakdol II' Pre-Incubating Successfully Completed

Expectations for Discovering Unique Korean Traditional Music Chamber Pieces on Yeongnam Art and Culture Themes

Exchange Between Korean Traditional Music Composition Mentors and Contest Winners... Pursuing High-Quality Performances

The National Gugak Center in Busan (Director: Lee Jungyeop) has successfully completed the pre-incubation process for the Gugak Creative Chamber Music “Joyakdol II,” which was held to enhance the quality of the competition entries.

The First Step in Korean Traditional Music Creative Chamber Performance! This Year's 'Joyakdol II' Pre-Incubating Successfully Completed Incubating submitted works for traditional Korean chamber music composition competition.

Starting with this incubation, the creative chamber music concert “Joyakdol II,” themed around Yeongnam’s artistic culture, will be held on October 12 at 3 PM at the Yejidang of the National Gugak Center in Busan.

The incubation was organized for the composers selected through the “Joyakdol II” competition, aiming to improve the completeness of their works before the main performance by revising and supplementing the winning pieces. Kye Seongwon, Artistic Director of the Instrumental and Vocal Ensemble at the National Gugak Center in Busan, and composer Hwang Hojun participated as composition mentors, engaging in networking sessions with young Gugak composers to exchange ideas and share composition techniques.

The detailed program included discussions and consultations for each selected piece, during which composers explained their works and freely received feedback from Gugak composition mentors, fostering an environment of exchange.

During the general review session, composers shared their thoughts on participating, and mentors provided overall evaluations of the winning pieces. After the event, the composers will continue to interact with the mentors to incorporate feedback and present high-quality music from the Yeongnam region in the upcoming concert.

The selected works are: ▲“Gut for All Living Things” (composed by Kim Hyerim) ▲“Gaibang Geoibang” (composed by Yoo Soongsan) ▲“Hwangmaesan Eoksae” (composed by Lee Yoonjin) ▲“Sajung Naseonhyang” for four-stringed Gugak chamber ensemble (composed by Choi Minjun) ▲“Sanmandi Achimsori” based on the theme of Dadaepo Hurisori (composed by Han Jina), totaling five pieces, all to be performed by members of the National Gugak Center in Busan’s instrumental ensemble (Artistic Director: Kye Seongwon). This is expected to provide Gugak composers with valuable opportunities to gain performance experience and grow as artists.

A Gugak composition mentor who participated in the incubation commented, “Even after the incubation ends, I will continue to support the selected composers through ongoing networking to ensure a successful performance.”

One of the selected composers expressed satisfaction, saying, “Unlike the previous ‘Season I’ concert, this incubation event provided a great opportunity to have professional discussions about music with senior figures in the Gugak composition field.”

The National Gugak Center in Busan plans to consistently organize Gugak creative chamber music competitions in the future to encourage the creative activities of young composers.
