The ‘Press the SOS Rescue Button’ relay challenge, jointly hosted by the Korea Coast Guard and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, involves participants wearing life jackets and urging others to press the SOS rescue button in emergencies, then nominating the next participant in a relay format. The challenge started last month and will continue until next month.
On the 18th, Jeju Maritime Police Chief So Byeong-yong, nominated by Jeju Regional Coast Guard Public Relations Ambassador Jeon Nomin, participated in the challenge at the local Hyeonsa Port and nominated the Chief of Namhae Regional Coast Guard and Lee Seung-du, Director of Jeju Maritime Fisheries Management Unit, as the next participants.
Chief So Byeong-yong said, “I joined the challenge hoping to raise awareness of the importance of life jackets, which have a significantly lower wearing rate compared to seat belts, so that more citizens will wear them. For fishermen, if an emergency occurs during fishing operations, please press the ‘SOS rescue button’ immediately, and Jeju Maritime Police will quickly respond.”
