Photos Including May 1980 Gwangju Citizens Beaten by Airborne Troops
Former Yonhap News Agency Gwangju-Jeonnam Bureau Chief Na Kyung-taek's '5.18 Coverage' from May 1980 in Gwangju has attracted attention after being featured in the American daily newspaper The New York Times (NYT).
On the 22nd, The New York Times published an article on its online edition focusing on Na Kyung-taek's experiences covering the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
The article vividly recounts his efforts to capture the scene in Gwangju despite the dangers at the time.
Photos he risked his life to take show Gwangju citizens being beaten by the Airborne Special Forces and citizens gathering in front of the old Jeonnam Provincial Office to protest.
He toured the May 18 sites, including the old Jeonnam Provincial Office and Jeonil Building, with a New York Times reporter, testifying about the events that occurred then.
Na was recognized for his work documenting Gwangju in May 1980, receiving the Courageous Journalist Award (from the Catholic Archdiocese of Gwangju) in May 1990, and the Korean Journalist Award in July 1990.
