Event Held to Enhance Digital Competence and Promote a Healthy Information Culture
Busan City will hold various events to promote information culture and digital inclusion, focusing on topics such as digital competency and proper digital usage, in celebration of the 37th Information Culture Month.
Information Culture Month is held every June by the government to foster and spread a sound information culture and to enhance public understanding of the intelligent information society.
This year’s slogan is “Digital Model Nation Korea, a Warm Digital World Together with the People.”
Main events include a special lecture on artificial intelligence, a puppet show on proper smartphone use tailored to young children, a proper smartphone use campaign, and the Do-dream Visiting Classroom.
The special lecture on artificial intelligence will be held in relay format across five regions nationwide. In Busan, it will take place on June 24 at the Busan Contents Korea Lab under the theme “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Everyday Life.” Professor Song Giltae, head of the Pusan National University Artificial Intelligence Convergence Research Center, will give a lecture on generative AI and digital healthcare.
The Proper Smartphone Use Campaign will be held on the 24th in the Haeundae area, where citizens will participate in activities such as smartphone overdependence surveys, brief counseling sessions (Mandala, bead crafts), smartphone cleaning, and film application, to encourage healthy smartphone use.
Mandala, derived from ancient Indian Sanskrit meaning “circle” or “circle of healing,” refers to an art therapy activity that helps individuals discover their center and draw strength from within.
The Do-dream Visiting Classroom will support various information and communication technology (ICT) experiences for children and youth from information-vulnerable groups at 15 institutions starting June 26, in collaboration with local children’s centers and social welfare organizations. Activities will include one-person media production, 3D pen education, and AI robot experiences.
On the 18th, a proper smartphone use puppet show (featuring a tiger and a rabbit) was held at Berkeley Kindergarten in Gijang-gun for 150 kindergarteners, encouraging young children to use smartphones in a healthy and proper manner through interactive communication.
Busan City is preparing various digital education policies, including the Digital Learning Center education project to strengthen citizens’ digital competencies and digital etiquette education for youth in collaboration with the city’s Office of Education.
Kim Bongcheol, Director of the City’s Administration and Autonomy Bureau, said, “I hope these diverse events prepared by the city in response to the era of digital advancement will provide an opportunity to gain information on artificial intelligence, which is increasingly penetrating our daily lives,” adding, “We will continue our efforts to bridge the digital divide and spread a sound information culture with the goal of making Busan a ‘digitally inclusive city.’ We ask for the interest and participation of many citizens in this year’s Information Culture Month events.”
