The National Jangheung Patriots Cemetery Development Project Has Gotten on Track

Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Jeonnam Province, and Jangheung County Sign 'Creation Implementation Agreement'

Since Jangheung, Jeollanam-do was finally selected as the site for the National Veterans Cemetery in September 2023, the development project has entered a full-scale promotion phase after nine months.

Once the development project is fully underway, the local economy is expected to be revitalized through the hiring of personnel related to the project, facility construction, and an increase in visitors including the bereaved families of the interred, students, and citizens. It is also anticipated to serve as a place for security education and patriotism experiences for future generations.

The National Jangheung Patriots Cemetery Development Project Has Gotten on Track

Jeollanam-do announced that on the 19th, it signed an implementation agreement with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and Jangheung County at the Jangheung County Office to successfully promote the National Jangheung Veterans Cemetery development project.

The signing ceremony was attended by Kang Jeong-ae, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs; Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do; Kim Seong, Mayor of Jangheung County; Wang Yoon-chae, Chairman of Jangheung County Council; heads of veterans organizations; and about 70 national merit recipients and others.

The agreement institutions agreed to cooperate to ensure that the National Jangheung Veterans Cemetery, to be developed in the Geumsan-ri area of Jangheung-eup, provides the highest level of burial services to national merit recipients and is established as a space for remembrance and healing for bereaved families and visitors.

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will actively gather opinions from Jangheung County and its residents to promote the project so that the National Jangheung Veterans Cemetery contributes to revitalizing the local economy.

Jeollanam-do will actively work on infrastructure development and the lifting of regulations under individual laws, while Jangheung County will promote the swift processing of permits and the installation of infrastructure.

The National Jangheung Veterans Cemetery will be equipped with a 20,000-unit enshrinement facility and auxiliary facilities by 2029, with a national budget investment of 49.7 billion KRW. The design, permit services, and land compensation will be completed by 2025, construction will begin in 2026, and the cemetery is scheduled to open in the second half of 2029.

Governor Kim Young-rok said, “We will do our best to support the development of the National Jangheung Veterans Cemetery as a national cemetery that provides the highest honor for the final resting place of national merit recipients and as a space to enjoy veterans culture. Since a temporary enshrinement facility is needed before the cemetery opens, we will ensure that a temporary enshrinement site operates even if it requires provincial funding support.”
