Wife Confirms Survival Amid Death Rumors and Obituaries
World-renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, who has been suffering from a stroke, faced distress due to rumors of his death. As the death rumors spread, his wife stepped forward to clarify, saying, "My husband is alive."
On the 19th, foreign media including the AP reported, "Valeria Chomsky, Noam Chomsky's wife, said that reports of Chomsky's death are not true."
In response to an email inquiry from the AP regarding the death rumors, Valeria wrote, "No, that is false." The 95-year-old Noam Chomsky was diagnosed with a stroke a year ago and was recently hospitalized in a hospital in Brazil. However, the hospital stated, "Chomsky has already been discharged to continue treatment at home."
On the morning of the 19th, death rumors about Chomsky rapidly spread on social networking services (SNS) such as X. Some online media published obituaries for Chomsky, saying "Remembering Chomsky," but after confirming he was not deceased, they changed it to "Supporting Chomsky." A Brazilian media outlet also deleted and corrected its obituary article on Chomsky.
The Chomsky family has been residing in Brazil since 2015. Avram Noam Chomsky is a left-wing scholar active in various fields including linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, history, social criticism, and writing, and is known as the father of modern linguistics. He is an emeritus professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a professor at the University of Arizona.
