Seoul and Jeju Lines Have Common 'Five-Star' Hotels... No Such Hotels in Six Other Provincial Cities

A Total of 87 Five-Star Hotels in Korea
33 Concentrated in Seoul
No Five-Star Hotels in Gwangju, Chungnam, etc.

It has been revealed that while there are many top-level 5-star hotels common in Seoul and Jeju, six other provinces do not have a single one.

On the 18th, Yonhap News reported the status of 5-star hotels citing the Korea Tourism Association Central Council. According to the report, there are a total of 87 5-star hotels in the country, with 33, or 4 out of 10, concentrated in Seoul. By district in Seoul, Jung-gu and Gangnam-gu each have the most with 7 hotels, followed by Yongsan-gu with 5, Songpa-gu with 4, Yeongdeungpo-gu with 3, Gwangjin-gu with 2, Jongno-gu with 2, Gangseo-gu with 1, Mapo-gu with 1, and Seocho-gu with 1. The 5-star hotels located in Jung-gu include representative domestic hotels such as Lotte Hotel Seoul, The Shilla Seoul, and Westin Chosun Seoul, while notable 5-star hotels in Gangnam-gu include Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, InterContinental Seoul COEX, and Oakwood Premier Hotel.


Following Seoul, Jeju had the second highest number of 5-star hotels with 20. The order continued with Busan (10), Incheon (8), Gangwon (6), Gyeonggi (3), Daegu and Gyeongbuk (2 each), and Daejeon, Ulsan, and Jeonnam (1 each). Jeju is home to hotels such as Grand Hyatt Jeju and Lotte Hotel Jeju, while Busan features Hotel Lotte Signiel Busan and Paradise Hotel Busan.


Gwangju was the only metropolitan city found to have no 5-star hotels. Along with Gwangju, six other local provinces?Gyeongnam, Jeonbuk, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Sejong?also had no 5-star hotels.

Tourist hotels, family hotels, small hotels, and traditional Korean hotels undergo evaluations every three years assessing safety, hygiene, and service, receiving star ratings from 1 to 5. To qualify as a 1-star hotel, clean rooms and bathrooms with breakfast availability are required; 2- and 3-star hotels must additionally have minimum food and beverage facilities and restaurants. To be classified as a 5-star hotel, a property must have a business center, three or more restaurants offering premium menus and top-notch service, large banquet halls and international conference rooms, and provide 24-hour room service.


There are a total of 896 hotels rated from 1 to 5 stars domestically, with 5-star hotels accounting for about 9.7%. By rating, there are 87 5-star hotels, 132 4-star, 242 3-star, 333 2-star, and 102 1-star hotels. The region with the most hotels is Seoul with 267, followed by Jeju (124), Gyeonggi (99), Busan (86), Incheon (65), Gyeongnam (46), and Gangwon (45).
