Pohang City Beaches to Open from July 6 to August 18... Strict Safety Management Ensured

This Year, Sinchang Beach Added for Operation, Usage Fees Standardized by Agreement

Strict Seawater Management, Shark Nets Installed, Safety Personnel Deployed for Maximum Safety

Pohang City's seven beaches will open for 44 days from July 6 to August 18.

On the 4th, Pohang City held the "2024 Pohang City Beach Council" at the pilot license test center conference room.

This is six days earlier than the opening period of beaches in Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, and Uljin along the East Coast, and this year, Sinchang Beach has been newly designated and will be operated.

The seven beaches?Yeongildae, Guryongpo, Dogu, Chilpo, Wolpo, Hwajin, and Sinchang?will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the season. In consideration of the local economy, the usage fees for facilities such as parasol and platform rentals have been set at the same agreed rates as last year.

In addition, since last year, Pohang City has been strictly managing seawater radioactivity due to growing public concern over the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The city has been conducting seawater radioactivity analysis at a level 100 times stricter than the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standards since June last year.

Furthermore, due to the recent appearance of shark groups caused by rising sea temperatures along the East Coast, shark nets will be installed at each beach to ensure safety for beachgoers.

Especially since a large number of visitors are expected during the peak season after July, the city plans to intensively inspect the cleanliness of convenience facilities such as restrooms and shower rooms at each beach during the opening period, and to operate safety personnel in three shifts around the clock for the safety of swimmers.

On the 4th, Pohang City held the '2024 Pohang City Beach Council' at the boating license test center meeting room to deliberate on the overall management and operation of the beaches.

The council was attended by 18 people, including representatives from the Nam-gu and Buk-gu Public Health Centers, Pohang Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, police, fire departments, other related organizations, and representatives of the seven designated beaches. They deliberated and resolved on the opening period and hours, designation of entrusted management and operators, and other facility usage fees, and discussed the overall operation of the beaches.

Vice Mayor Jang Sangkil said, "We will focus our administrative efforts to ensure that people can enjoy safe and comfortable beaches, thereby enhancing the city brand of Pohang as a marine tourism city." He added, "We will link the opening of the beaches with beach festivals, attractions, and food to revitalize the local economy."
