Foreigners and Institutions 'Sell'... KOSPI and KOSDAQ Close Lower KOSPI Decline

On the 17th, the Korean stock market closed lower due to simultaneous selling by foreigners and institutions. Samsung Electronics, the largest by market capitalization, slipped just below the "80,000 won" mark. The battery sector also closed weak. The rise in the won-dollar exchange rate amid concerns over political instability in Europe is interpreted as dampening investor sentiment toward the domestic stock market.

The KOSPI closed at 2,744.10, down 0.52% (14.32 points) from the previous trading day. On that day, the KOSPI opened at 2,754.83, down 0.13% (3.59 points) from the previous close.

The decline widened due to the combined selling pressure from foreigners and institutions. Foreigners and institutions net sold 142.7 billion won and 139.7 billion won, respectively. Individual investors alone net bought 312.6 billion won. In the futures market, only foreigners sold 474.7 billion won, while individuals and institutions bought 62.2 billion won and 420.1 billion won, respectively.

Among the top 10 stocks by market capitalization, only SK Hynix +0.90%, Hyundai Motor +3.92%, and Kia +5.22% closed higher. Notable declines included LG Energy Solution -3.58%, KB Financial Group -3.21%, and POSCO Holdings -2.37%. Samsung Electronics, the largest by market capitalization, closed down 1.88% at 78,100 won.

The KOSDAQ ended at 858.96, down 0.37% (3.23 points) from the previous trading day. It opened at 860.13, down 0.24% from the previous close. Similar to the KOSPI, foreigners and institutions net sold 6 billion won and 67.2 billion won, respectively, while individuals net bought 312.6 billion won.

The top 10 stocks by market capitalization showed mixed trends. Notable declines included EcoPro BM -0.80%, EcoPro -2.31%, and Enchem -7.07%.

Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate opened at 1,383.0 won, up 3.7 won. The won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,381.2 won, up 1.9 won on the day.
