1.75 Million Weekend Theatergoers
Global Revenue Reaches 409.8 Billion Won in One Week
The Disney·Pixar animated film "Inside Out 2," which depicts emotions inside the mind, topped the box office by attracting 2.08 million viewers in its opening week.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 17th, "Inside Out 2" drew 1,754,540 viewers over the weekend (14th?16th), securing the number one spot at the box office. The film was released on the 12th and has recorded a cumulative audience of 2,082,740. Its revenue share reached 84.3%. The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was 2,086,013, of which about 1.75 million watched "Inside Out 2."
The previous film, "Inside Out" (2015), attracted 4.97 million viewers domestically and earned $857.6 million (1.1822 trillion KRW) worldwide. It was a hit, earning 4 to 5 times its production cost of $175 million (241.2375 billion KRW). The sequel recorded the highest North American opening weekend score of $155 million (214.1 billion KRW) last weekend. It earned $295 million (409.8 billion KRW) worldwide in its first week, signaling a strong box office performance.
The film surpassed 1 million cumulative viewers on Saturday (15th) and reached 2 million on Sunday (16th), six days faster than its predecessor. The CGV Golden Egg index, a real audience rating, stands at 97%, indicating a positive early response. Women accounted for 65.3% of bookings, men 34.7%. By age group, viewers were 40s (28.9%), 30s (27.2%), 20s (26.4%), and teens (8.2%).
In "Inside Out 2," the protagonist Riley enters adolescence at age 13. New unfamiliar emotions such as anxiety, embarrassment, boredom, and envy appear in the emotion control center inside her head, disrupting her peaceful daily life and portraying the crisis and adventure that begin anew. The film has been praised for eliciting laughter and empathy not only from children but also adult audiences.
The weekend's second place went to "Furiosa: Mad Max Saga" (60,068 viewers), third to "Wonderland" (51,315 viewers), and fourth to "She Died" (30,810 viewers). "Drive," released on the 12th, started in fifth place with 27,238 viewers.
"Inside Out 2" is expected to continue its box office success for the time being. As of 9:30 AM that day, it was leading real-time reservation rates with 38.8% (97,845 tickets). Second place was "Hijacking" (17.2%), followed by "Escape" (9.9%). It remains to be seen whether several upcoming Korean films such as "Hijacking," "Handsome Guys," and "Escape" will be able to attract audiences without losing momentum to "Inside Out 2."
