Gwangju Seo-gu Council Urges Improvement of Caregivers' Working Conditions and More

The Seo-gu Council announced that the proposal was adopted at the first plenary session of the 322nd regular meeting held on the 14th, and will be sent to the President, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Minister of Health and Welfare, the secretariats of city and provincial, city, county, and district councils nationwide, and the Gwangju Seo-gu Office.

All Seo-gu council members stated, “It is urgent to ensure employment stability and appropriate fees to improve the treatment and social status of care workers. Additionally, institutional improvements are needed to facilitate smooth caregiving tasks, such as allowing home elderly welfare facility vehicles to park in disabled parking zones.”

Kim Su-young, the vice-chairman who sponsored the proposal, said, “Due to the rapid entry into an aging society and the increase in single-person households, the caregiving functions previously performed by families and communities have weakened, making securing caregiving personnel an important social task. However, the poor treatment of care workers and low satisfaction with social perspectives and recognition have caused gaps in caregiving.”

He continued, “We must expand preventive health care services and improve age-friendly environments by creating conditions that protect workers’ rights and improve work efficiency. Through this, we should build an active health society by ensuring a dignified old age.”
