Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) is actively undertaking the 'Youth Digital Sexual Crime Prevention Project' to protect adolescents from the recently increasing digital sexual crimes. The main components of the prevention project include digital sexual crime prevention education, awareness surveys on digital sexual crimes, and campaigns conducted through a citizen participation group.
The Seocho Gender Equality Activity Center will dispatch professional instructors to a total of seven elementary and middle schools starting this month to provide digital sexual crime prevention education. The district expects a total of 3,000 students to participate this year.
The prevention education covers ▲ the concept of digital sexual crimes ▲ understanding the characteristics of digital spaces ▲ cases of digital sexual crimes ▲ prevention and response methods, focusing on real-life scenarios to help adolescents easily understand and actively engage. The Bangbae Center at the Seocho Women and Family Plaza near Bangbae Station will also recruit applicants and offer free prevention education.
In July and September this year, small group education sessions for parents and adolescents will be held at the Seocho Women and Family Plaza and Youth Center. An active-duty police officer from the Seocho Police Station will introduce cases of digital sexual crimes involving children and adolescents, enhancing parents' understanding of digital sexual crimes and informing them of their roles at home.
Additionally, the district is recruiting a citizen participation group for the youth digital sexual crime prevention campaign. Composed of local residents, the group will raise awareness about the dangers of digital sexual crimes and provide information on prevention methods and district support programs. Prior to recruitment, the district plans to conduct a survey throughout June on adolescents' online usage patterns and safety awareness.
The district's initiative to promote the 'Youth Digital Sexual Crime Prevention Project' stems from the increasing trend of adolescent victimization, with victims in their teens accounting for 24.6% of digital sexual crime cases (source: Korea Women's Human Rights Institute), highlighting the need for proactive prevention efforts to protect youth.
Mayor Jeon Seong-su stated, “We will actively promote various digital sexual crime prevention projects to ensure that growing adolescents are not exposed to digital sexual crimes.”
