On-site Inspection of Harvesting Farms and Listening to Difficulties

Changnyeong County, Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 13th that County Governor Sung Nakin visited onion harvesting sites on June 11 and 12 to conduct on-site inspections and encourage local farmers.

Governor Sung Nakin listened to the onion crop conditions and difficulties faced by farmers at the harvest sites in Bongsan-ri, Gyesong-myeon; Daegok-ri, Namji-eup; Juksa-ri, Yeongsan-myeon; and Ugak-ri, Docheon-myeon.

This year, the onion cultivation area in Changnyeong County is 563 hectares, with approximately 85% of the onions being mid- to late-maturing varieties that are harvested in earnest from early June.

Recently, due to abnormal temperatures during the onion growing season, issues such as onion bolting, splitting, physiological disorders, and pest outbreaks were expected to increase damage to farmers. However, Changnyeong County, known as the birthplace of onion cultivation, has a long history and accumulated agricultural expertise, resulting in less damage and better crop conditions compared to other regions. As a result, the average yield is expected to increase slightly compared to last year.

Governor Sung said, "Although there were concerns about poor onion growth this year due to high temperatures and frequent rainfall after transplanting, the overall growth status appears to be good," adding, "We will continue to monitor farming conditions and listen more closely to voices from the field."
