Supreme Court Confirms Life Sentence for Jeong Yoo-jeong in 'Tutoring App Peer Murder' Case

Jeong Yujeong (25), who brutally murdered a peer she met through a tutoring application (app), dismembered the body, and abandoned the remains, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

On the 13th, the Supreme Court's 2nd Division (Presiding Justice Kim Sang-hwan) dismissed Jeong Yujeong's appeal in the final trial for charges of murder, corpse mutilation, and abandonment, confirming the original sentence of life imprisonment. The order to attach an electronic location tracking device for 30 years was also upheld.

Jeong Yujeong was indicted on charges of entering the home of a peer woman, A, in Geumjeong-gu, Busan, whom she met through a tutoring app, at around 5:40 p.m. on May 26 last year, killing A with a weapon and abandoning the body. Both the first and second trial courts sentenced Jeong Yujeong to life imprisonment and ordered the attachment of an electronic location tracking device for 30 years.

Jeong Yujeong's side appealed, arguing that the original sentence was too harsh, but the Supreme Court did not accept the appeal. The court stated, "It cannot be said that the original court's sentence of life imprisonment for the defendant is grossly unfair."

Additionally, the court rejected Jeong Yujeong's claim that the order to attach the electronic device was unjust, stating, "The defendant only raised this as a reason for appeal at the final trial, having neither made it a reason for appeal earlier nor having the original court consider it ex officio, thus it does not constitute a valid reason for appeal."
