On the 13th, the Mokpo Coast Guard reported that at around 3:18 a.m., a 33-ton Tongyeong-registered coastal eel trap fishing boat capsized 18 km northeast of Gageodo Island in Sinan. The vessel was carrying a total of nine people, including three Koreans and six foreigners. Among them, one person died and two are missing. The remaining six were rescued by nearby fishing boats.
The missing crew members are Indonesian nationals. The Coast Guard and the Central Maritime Special Rescue Team deployed six patrol vessels and five aircraft for the search. The Navy also mobilized four ships and one aircraft, and six civilian vessels joined the search efforts.
Based on statements from the rescued crew, the Coast Guard suspects that the fishing boat capsized after colliding with another vessel. They have identified a cargo ship that passed through the area at the time of the accident and, after tracking it down, stopped the ship to verify the collision with the cargo ship’s officials.
