Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake in Buan, Jeonbuk... Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures본부 Level 1 Activated (Update)

Jeonbuk, Seismic Intensity 7... Level Causing Building Damage
Minister Lee Sang-min "Earthquake Alert 'Warning' Issued"

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that at 8:26 a.m. on the 12th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred 4 km south-southwest of Buan-gun, Jeonbuk, prompting the activation of Level 1 of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.


The instrumental intensity, which indicates the degree of shaking, was observed at a maximum of Ⅶ (7) in Jeonbuk. An instrumental intensity of 7 indicates a level where objects move and damage to buildings can occur. Additionally, intensities of Ⅳ (4) were recorded in Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Chungnam, and Ⅲ (3) in Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungbuk.

According to the National Fire Agency, as of 8:40 a.m., 198 earthquake-related reports were received. By region, reports were confirmed as follows: ▲Seoul 2 ▲Busan 2 ▲Gwangju 14 ▲Daejeon 14 ▲Sejong 9 ▲Gyeonggi 23 ▲Gangwon 1 ▲Chungbuk 24 ▲Chungnam 27 ▲Jeonbuk 62 ▲Jeonnam 13 ▲Gyeongbuk 2 ▲Changwon 5. Among these, there were 2 on-site dispatches in Buan, Jeonbuk.


Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, activated Level 1 emergency operations of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at around 8:35 a.m. on the same day to promptly assess damage and take urgent measures if necessary, and issued an earthquake crisis alert at the "Warning" level. The earthquake crisis alert is issued in the order of Interest - Caution - Warning - Serious.


As the head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, Minister Lee gave an urgent directive, saying, "Relevant ministries and local governments should closely cooperate, maintain an emergency response system, promptly assess the damage situation, and take necessary measures."
