Mapo-gu, Full-scale Quarantine Efforts in Vulnerable Areas

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced that due to the prolonged hot and humid climate from early summer causing a rapid increase in sanitary pests, it is intensively conducting pest control and disinfection in vulnerable areas to alleviate residents' inconvenience and prevent infectious diseases.

The Mapo-gu Public Health Center's pest control task force has been actively carrying out pest control activities at least once a month since May in vulnerable areas within the district, such as river surroundings, redevelopment zones, and garbage accumulation sites selected earlier this year.

Additionally, upon receiving complaints related to sudden pest outbreaks, the task force dispatches specialized companies within 24 hours, including weekends, to maintain an uninterrupted pest control system.

Furthermore, to promote self-pest control in vulnerable areas, equipment and pest control chemicals have been provided to the Saemaeul Autonomous Pest Control Teams composed of residents from each neighborhood.

Along with this, the Mapo-gu Public Health Center operates a "Concentrated Pest Control Day," conducting joint public-private pest control activities with the Saemaeul Autonomous Pest Control Teams, focusing on traditional markets and parks closely related to residents' daily lives.

To create a pleasant environment, eight additional eco-friendly pest repellers are planned to be installed. Including the existing 187 units, Mapo-gu plans to operate a total of 195 pest repellers to ensure residents do not suffer from pest-related inconveniences.

A district official stated, "For prompt pest control, please report immediately to the Public Health Center upon discovering pest habitats or outbreak areas," and added, "We ask for active cooperation from each household by managing septic tanks, removing mosquito breeding sites such as plant saucers, wearing light-colored long sleeves and long pants, and using mosquito repellents to protect health from infectious diseases."

Moreover, Mapo-gu is utilizing ultraviolet lamps and digital mosquito monitors installed in densely populated residential areas to predict pest control demand and infectious disease outbreaks. The district is distributing over 5,000 pest control chemicals targeting cockroaches, mosquitoes, ants, and other pests to welfare facilities for the elderly, disabled, and children in vulnerable areas, making every effort to ensure residents' health and safety.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "We are conducting thorough pest control activities to protect residents from infectious diseases and create a safe Mapo," and added, "As pest outbreaks increase due to climate change, we will minimize residents' inconvenience through meticulous pre-surveillance and control."
