Prabowo Subianto, the president-elect of Indonesia, expressed his welcome for the proposal to accept 1,000 Palestinian refugee children from the Gaza Strip.
According to Antara News and others on the 11th, Prabowo Subianto responded to this proposal during a meeting with reporters on the 7th. He welcomed the suggestion by Kofifah Indar Parawansa, former governor of East Java, to send 1,000 refugee children from the Gaza Strip to Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, saying, "I will report this to President Joko Widodo."
He stated that not only East Java but also several prominent figures in West Java are ready to accept refugees from the Gaza Strip, adding, "We plan to cooperate with the UN Secretary-General and leaders of relevant countries to make this plan a reality." However, he did not disclose specific details such as selection criteria, methods, or reception areas.
Currently, President-elect Prabowo is visiting Amman, Jordan, on behalf of President Jokowi to attend Middle East summits including Egypt and Jordan. At this meeting, they discussed the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
On the 1st, he attended the 21st Asia Security Conference (Shangri-La Dialogue) held in Singapore, where he stated, "If requested by the UN, we can dispatch a considerable number of peacekeeping forces," and also mentioned, "We are prepared to operate a field hospital capable of accommodating and treating 1,000 patients in the Gaza Strip."
Indonesia is a country where Muslims constitute the overwhelming majority. It has long supported the independence of Palestine, an Islamic brother nation, and does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.
