66km of Sewers and 37,000 Storm Drains Dredged and Cleaned in Seongbuk-gu
Flood Prevention and Odor Reduction Expected to Improve Residential Environment through Sewer Maintenance
Designated Storm Drain Managers and Emergency Contact Network Operated in Flood-Prone Areas
As damage from abnormal weather events rapidly increases worldwide, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) has established a maintenance plan for sewage facilities to prepare for sudden summer natural disasters such as heavy rain and began full-scale sewage facility maintenance in February.
The district is first conducting dredging and cleaning operations in flood-prone areas to prevent sediment such as soil, cigarette butts, and garbage inside sewage facilities from blocking the flow of wastewater and stormwater and causing foul odors.
As of June 10, dredging and cleaning work has been completed on 66 km of sewage pipelines and 37,000 stormwater inlets within the area.
Additionally, in flood-prone zones, community leaders and officials from the local community centers have been designated as stormwater inlet managers to frequently check drainage conditions. An emergency contact network has also been established and is being operated to enable prompt action through reports and other means.
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, stated, “To prevent damage caused by heavy summer rains, we will continue flexible responses and management, including regular patrols of flood-prone areas and immediate handling of sewage facility inconveniences. We will do our best to ensure the safety of our residents.”
