Encouraging Public Participation in AI Policy
Utilizing for Leading Global AI Norms
Also Conducting 'Digital Education Norms' Survey
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 11th that it will initiate social public discussions to establish a new digital order.
First, from tomorrow (the 12th) until the 31st of next month, a contentious vote and a policy idea contest regarding securing the safety, trust, and ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) will be conducted through the 'Digital Public Forum' website.
Through the contentious vote, the ministry plans to gauge public opinion on △ opportunities and threats of AI technology △ regulatory directions for safe and trustworthy AI △ government AI policy priorities, and actively utilize these insights to lead global AI norms in the future.
Additionally, a policy idea contest will be held on current issues such as △ bridging the AI usage gap △ securing ethical awareness among AI developers △ preventing personal rights infringements by AI, providing everyone the opportunity to propose new policies.
Experts from academia and industry, as well as policy officials from relevant ministries, will directly evaluate the policy ideas, and a public vote will also be conducted. Outstanding policy ideas will be awarded prize money (50,000 KRW for the grand prize, 40,000 KRW for excellence, and 10,000 KRW for encouragement).
The policy idea representing this year will be additionally selected and awarded the Minister of Science and ICT Award at the end of the year.
Public discussions will continue offline as well. About 50 students and general public interested in AI safety, trust, and ethics will gather to participate in the 'Digital In-depth Issue Colloquium,' where science influencers will join the discussion, scheduled for early next month.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Science and ICT, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, will conduct a survey for about a week starting from the 12th on the 'Digital Education Norms,' a digital rights charter for educational sites.
The Ministry of Education plans to listen to public opinions on the core values that education in the digital era should pursue and the basic principles that members should autonomously follow, and will reflect these in the final digital education norms to be announced at the end of this month.
Kang Dohyun, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "The focused public discussions starting this month will contribute to increasing social acceptance in the digital advanced era," adding, "As the AI Seoul Summit emphasized the safety of AI technology to citizens worldwide, we will actively listen to the opinions of our people and reflect them in policies."
