Simultaneous Holding of the 4th Marine Joint Committee and the 7th Marine Science and Technology Joint Committee on the 12th
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will simultaneously hold the '4th Marine Joint Committee' and the '7th Marine Science and Technology Joint Committee' on the 12th at the Park Hyatt Busan to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in the marine and fisheries sector.
According to the Ministry on the 11th, about 50 people, including Kim Seong-beom, Director General of Marine Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and Jodi Mahardi, First Deputy Minister of Indonesia's Marine Investment Coordinating Board, as well as government officials and experts from both countries in the marine and fisheries fields, are expected to attend the committee meetings.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries signed the 'Korea-Indonesia Marine Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding' with Indonesia's Marine Investment Coordinating Board in May 2016 and held the '1st Marine Joint Committee' in Jakarta, Indonesia, in December of the same year.
At this year's '4th Marine Joint Committee,' various cooperation measures in the marine and fisheries sector will be discussed based on the 'Special Strategic Partnership' established during President Yoon Seok-yeol's state visit to Indonesia last year. In addition to the marine plant services sector, where the two countries have been continuously cooperating, presentations and discussions will be held on bilateral cooperation projects across the marine and fisheries sector, including port development in the Batam and Tanjungpinang regions and seaweed aquaculture, as well as ways to expand cooperation.
Regarding the marine plant services sector, Korea will share its achievement as the first country to dismantle Indonesia's aging marine plants and recycle them as artificial reefs, and further explore cooperation measures between the two countries to utilize marine plants in liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, carbon capture and storage, and other areas. In addition, presentations and discussions will cover sustainable port development strategies, smart technologies to improve aquaculture productivity, and marine observation and forecasting systems for marine safety across the marine and fisheries sector.
At the '7th Marine Science and Technology Joint Committee,' the major achievements and progress of the 'Korea-Indonesia Marine Science Joint Research Center,' established to strengthen cooperation in marine science under the bilateral marine cooperation memorandum, will be reviewed, and cooperation measures in marine science and technology on key marine issues such as marine debris and coastal disasters will be discussed.
Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "Taking this joint committee as an opportunity, we will further strengthen cooperation with Indonesia, a key ASEAN partner country, for sustainable marine and fisheries development," and added, "We expect that the private sector, including mutual entry and exchanges of companies in both countries in fields such as marine plant dismantling and port development, will become more active and develop further."
