New Chairman Shin: "I Want to Create a Country Where People's Safety and Happy Lives Are Guaranteed"
Shin Jeong-hoon, Member of the National Assembly (The Democratic Party of Korea, Naju·Hwasun), was elected as the chairman of the Administrative Safety Committee for the first half of the 22nd National Assembly.
Amid evaluations that the influence of politicians from Gwangju and Jeonnam has significantly declined compared to the past, Shin's election as a standing committee chairman is seen as a restoration of pride.
On the late afternoon of the 10th, Speaker Woo Won-shik conducted voting for 11 standing committee chairpersons submitted by the Democratic Party of Korea on the 7th.
With the ruling party, the People Power Party, absent, the voting results were as follows: ▲Park Chan-dae as Chairman of the National Assembly Steering Committee ▲Jung Cheong-rae as Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee ▲Kim Young-ho as Chairman of the Education Committee ▲Choi Min-hee as Chairman of the Science, Technology, Broadcasting and Communications Committee ▲Shin Jeong-hoon as Chairman of the Administrative Safety Committee ▲Jeon Jae-soo as Chairman of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee ▲Uh Ki-gu as Chairman of the Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock, Food, and Maritime Affairs Committee ▲Park Joo-min as Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee ▲Ahn Ho-young as Chairman of the Environment and Labor Committee ▲Maeng Sung-kyu as Chairman of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee ▲Park Jung as Chairman of the Special Budget and Accounts Committee.
Shin Jeong-hoon was the only National Assembly member representing the Gwangju·Jeonnam region.
Shin is known as a 'grassroots politician,' having served as a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly in the 5th and 6th terms and as mayor of Naju during the 3rd and 4th terms of direct elections. He entered the National Assembly through the 19th by-election in Naju·Hwasun, lost to candidate Son Geum-joo in the 20th general election, but successfully re-entered the National Assembly in the 21st election and was re-elected in this election, achieving a third term.
Within the Democratic Party, he served as the chairman of the National Agricultural and Fisheries Committee and head of the Rice Price Normalization Task Force (TF), mainly working in the agriculture and fisheries sectors. He also served as the Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries in the Office of the Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Blue House during the Moon Jae-in administration.
In the 21st National Assembly, he led legislation on the Grain Management Act in the Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock, Food, and Maritime Affairs Committee, and in April last year, he shaved his head in protest when President Yoon Seok-yeol announced his intention to veto the bill.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman Shin said, "As chairman of the Administrative Safety Committee, I want to effectively address the crises facing local governments," adding, "Local areas, which form the foundation of the Republic of Korea, face unprecedented crises such as regional imbalance, population decline, and local extinction, which are urgent issues the National Assembly can no longer postpone."
He continued, "It is time to do our best to make the country safe so that we no longer have to worry about tragic incidents like the Itaewon disaster or the Osong underground passage disaster," and added, "I want to work with fellow members to create a country where people living in local areas have dreams and hope, and where the safety and happy lives of all citizens are guaranteed."
