Goseong County in Gyeongsangnam-do is making every effort to minimize damage to fisheries, including implementing jellyfish control projects, following the earliest-ever jellyfish advisory issued for all coastal waters of Gyeongsangnam-do on May 27.
On June 10, County Governor Lee Sang-geun, together with the Director of Fisheries Policy of Gyeongsangnam-do, visited a fixed net fishery in the Jaranman sea area to inspect the site and assess the damage caused by the mass occurrence of jellyfish.
On this day, Governor Lee encouraged the fishermen who are working hard to reduce the damage caused by the mass occurrence of jellyfish and listened to their difficulties.
He also instructed relevant officials to make every effort in the control work so that fishermen do not suffer due to fishery disasters, and asked them to provide guidance to prevent safety accidents such as heat-related illnesses at the work site.
Previously, in response to the jellyfish advisory, the county swiftly established the "2024 Comprehensive Jellyfish Damage Prevention Plan," formed three response teams, and focused all efforts on preventing jellyfish damage through preemptive monitoring and real-time communication with fishermen.
Additionally, as a proactive measure, the county purchased 117 tons of jellyfish caught as bycatch during fishing operations. However, as the mass occurrence of jellyfish continues, since June 3, the county has been renting fishing vessels to carry out "harmful organism jellyfish control operations."
A county official stated, "Since jellyfish control is directly linked to the income of fishermen, we will do our utmost in the jellyfish control operations."
