Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok on the 10th ordered a thorough investigation into whether violent organizations were involved in the stabbing murder incident that occurred in downtown Gwangju on the 7th.
According to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, on the morning of the same day, after receiving a report on the investigation status from Lee Jong-hyuk, Chief Prosecutor of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, Lee instructed, "From the initial stage, cooperate closely with the police to thoroughly investigate not only the murder case itself but also any illegal activities and the involvement of violent organizations behind the dispute over entertainment business interests that triggered and underpinned the incident."
The suspect, Kim (58), is accused of wielding a weapon against two men in their 40s in the Cheomdan district of Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, around 7:30 p.m. on the 7th, killing one and seriously injuring the other. Kim and the victims each operated a brothel supplying entertainment venue hostesses and had been clashing over business interests. It was also investigated that they quarreled on the day of the incident. The court issued an arrest warrant for Kim the day before. It is reported that a prosecutor specializing in violent crimes attended Kim's detention hearing and expressed the opinion for detention.
Prosecutor General Lee noted that the incident occurred on a Friday evening in a bustling downtown entertainment district crowded with citizens, defining it as a "serious crime that gravely threatens citizens' safety and public order," and ordered, "Make every effort to strictly respond to illegal violent crimes around entertainment districts to prevent recurrence of similar offenses."
