Promotion of 'Street Maintenance with Residents' Project on Doksan-ro and Geumha-ro
Expecting Improved Pedestrian Environment and Enhanced Civic Awareness through Intensive Crackdowns and Resident Participation
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will carry out the ‘Street Maintenance with Residents’ project targeting sections where pedestrian passage is inconvenient due to road obstructions until June 30.
The project is being promoted to create a clean and safe walking environment as roadside obstructions in areas with high foot traffic damage the urban landscape and threaten residents' safety.
After a preliminary survey, the district selected a total of 3.5 km for inspection, including a 1.4 km section of Doksan-ro (Doksan-ro 364 to Doksan-ro 224), where shops line both sides of the road and the sidewalk is narrow, and a 2.1 km section of Geumha-ro (Geumha-ro 638 to Geumha-ro 740).
This maintenance project will be conducted in cooperation with the local residents’ group ‘Self-Disaster Prevention Team’ in the area, through campaigns to improve the walking environment, guidance to shop owners who place items on the road, and administrative actions such as fines imposed on habitual violators.
Obstructions used to secure parking on side roads, such as water containers, discarded tires, and flower pots, will be forcibly removed within 2 to 3 days if not complied with after 1 to 2 rounds of guidance and sticker attachment.
For obstructions such as street vendors and product displays in front of stores, fines will be imposed up to a maximum of 1.5 million KRW if violations persist after 1 to 2 rounds of guidance: 100,000 KRW for illegal occupation areas of 1㎡ or less, with an additional 100,000 KRW for each square meter exceeding 1㎡.
A district official said, “Since this project is promoted through public-private cooperation, it is expected to raise citizens’ awareness and consensus on improving the walking environment and be effective in establishing residents’ voluntary order.”
The district has conducted a total of about 43,000 street maintenance activities targeting street vendors and obstructions over the past three years.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “As the proliferation of obstructions on roads and sidewalks infringes on passage rights and increases the risk of safety accidents, the need for maintenance has been continuously raised. We will create a city where people want to walk by establishing pleasant walkways through strong crackdowns and maintenance activities.”
