The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization analyzed over 7.17 million pieces of social data to publish "Intersection (Differentiated Local Travel by Transportation Mode)" on the 7th, which captures travelers' behaviors and perceptions that vary by mode of transportation.
The report analyzed more than 7.17 million social data entries mentioning keywords related to "transportation mode" and "travel" simultaneously on blogs, Instagram, and X from January 2022 to March 2024. Among these, mentions of public transportation travel were the highest at about 3.46 million (48.3%). Air travel followed with about 1.7 million mentions (23.8%), and train travel came next with about 1.33 million mentions (18.7%).
According to the report, popular travel destinations or frequently mentioned areas differ by transportation mode. Train travel had many mentions of Gangneung City in Gangwon Province, Haeundae District in Busan Metropolitan City, and Gyeongju City in Gyeongsangbuk Province. Public transportation travel favored Gangneung City, Gyeongju City, and Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province. Air travel had many mentions of Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province, Seogwipo City in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and Gimhae City in Gyeongsangnam Province. Ship travel was popular in Mokpo City in Jeollanam Province, Haeundae District in Busan, and Ulleung County in Gyeongsangbuk Province, while bicycle travel was frequently found in Jung District in Seoul Special City, Gyeongju City in Gyeongsangbuk Province, and Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province.
The most enjoyed activities by travelers locally were visiting cafes or popular restaurants. These activities had the highest mention counts for train, public transportation, and air travel. In contrast, leisure activities were the most frequently mentioned main activities for ship and bicycle travel.
The emotions felt by travelers using different transportation modes also varied. For train, public transportation, and air travel, "relaxation" was the most frequently mentioned emotion. Train travel was associated with "romance," public transportation travel with "comfort," ship travel with "anticipation," and air travel with "excitement," distinguishing these positive factors from other transportation modes. On the other hand, negative perceptions related to each mode included travel time and cost for train travel, congestion for public transportation, and safety concerns for ship, bicycle, and air travel.
The report analyzed 13 different themes including travel preferences, activities during travel, and positive and negative perceptions by transportation mode such as train, public transportation, ship, bicycle, and air travel. It also created tourist personas by transportation mode based on the 2022 National Travel Survey results, providing information that can be used for marketing purposes.
Shim Hong-yong, head of the Tourism Consulting Team at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, "The organization plans to apply the analysis results of the report to its projects to provide customized information and utilize it for discovering local content and developing tourism products."
