In the future, some bank apps will also be able to use the 'mobile ID card.'
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 8th, the companies selected to participate in the private sector opening of mobile ID cards this year are KB Kookmin Bank, NH Nonghyup Bank, Viva Republica (Toss), the Kakao-KakaoBank consortium, and Naver.
A mobile ID card is an ID stored on a personal mobile phone that can be used both online and offline. It has the same legal effect as a physical ID card. Until now, the government has only recognized official ID cards such as government employee IDs, driver's licenses, and national veterans registration cards, but it has also announced a legislative amendment to expand this to include resident registration cards within the year.
The companies selected to participate in the private sector opening will start system development from this month and complete it within the year. Once they pass the suitability evaluation, they will issue mobile ID cards. By incorporating mobile ID cards, companies can increase the monthly active users (MAU) of their apps, thereby enhancing app competitiveness. Especially in the current situation where non-face-to-face financial transactions are becoming more active, banks are putting their utmost effort into boosting app competitiveness.
KB Kookmin Bank plans to complete system development within the year and provide mobile ID card services through the 'Kookmin Wallet' offered by KB Star Banking. Since launching the Kookmin Wallet in 2022, which replaces physical wallets for identification, certification, and payment, KB Kookmin Bank has been attracting users with various lifestyle-oriented services. A KB Kookmin Bank official said, "We will actively collaborate with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to ensure that more citizens can use mobile ID cards safely and conveniently."
NH Nonghyup Bank also plans to complete system development within the year and provide mobile ID card issuance services through NH All One Bank. An NH Nonghyup Bank official stated, "NH All One Bank will continue to expand services that customers need."
Toss plans to place the mobile ID card on the app home screen so that users can use it the fastest and most conveniently. In addition, they plan to operate a 24/7 customer center year-round to respond to user inquiries related to mobile ID cards.
KakaoBank participated together with Kakao. They plan to add a mobile ID card menu within the KakaoBank app and the 'More' tab of KakaoTalk so that users can issue and check their mobile ID cards quickly and easily. A KakaoBank official said, "Based on the authentication and security technology capabilities we have built up so far, we will contribute to creating a safe environment for using ID cards and conducting financial transactions."
