The Nature of Military Demonstrations in Response to Ukrainian Military Support
As tensions escalate between the Western world and Russia over military support for Ukraine, foreign media reports have emerged that Russian warships are heading to the Caribbean for military exercises.
According to the Associated Press and other sources on the 5th (local time), Russia is moving warships to conduct military training in the Caribbean, close to the United States. This exercise appears to be intended to demonstrate military power in response to Western military support for Ukraine.
U.S. administration officials have stated that Russian warships are expected to arrive in the Caribbean within weeks. U.S. officials said a small number of Russian warships and support vessels will participate in the exercises. The Russian warships are expected to make port calls in Venezuela and Cuba, countries friendly to Russia.
This is not the first time Russia has dispatched warships to the Caribbean. The current military exercises are being conducted following Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement on the same day that "we have the right to act in the same way," in relation to President Biden allowing Ukraine to use weapons received from the U.S. to attack Russian territory.
U.S. officials explained that these exercises are a definite part of Russia's broad response to U.S. support for Ukraine and are intended to show that the Russian Navy, which has lost several vessels due to Ukrainian attacks, still has the capability to conduct international military operations.
The Ukrainian military claimed in March that Russia had lost one-third of its Black Sea Fleet over the past two years due to Ukrainian attacks.
The U.S. Navy has been tracking the movements of Russian vessels. U.S. officials forecast that the Russian vessels will remain in the Caribbean throughout the summer and may conduct follow-up exercises in the same area after the current training concludes.
