Launch of the Environmental Monitoring Committee
A communication channel for public-private dialogue has been established to address current issues and share information related to the Naju SRF cogeneration power plant.
Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Yoon Byung-tae) announced on the 5th that it held the launching ceremony of the 'Naju Cogeneration Power Plant Resident Participation Environmental Monitoring Committee' at the Ihwa Room in the city hall.
The committee's launch was part of a win-win development agreement signed in June last year between Naju City and the Korea District Heating Corporation, the operator of the power plant.
The committee consists of a total of 15 members: the Deputy Mayor of Naju as the chairperson, 7 local representative residents, 4 experts, and 4 ex officio members from the city and the heating corporation.
The monitoring committee plans to work on securing citizens' health and environmental rights by discussing eco-friendly power plant operation methods, responding to environmental issues, and serving as a communication channel for sharing power plant operation information such as pollutant emission concentrations.
Earlier, leveraging the win-win development agreement with the Korea District Heating Corporation, Naju City has been posting monthly usage volumes of SRF (Solid Refuse Fuel), power plant operation status, and post-environmental impact survey results on the city hall website since July last year. Additionally, TMS (stack monitoring system) measurement results through the Korea Environment Corporation's public system are also disclosed.
A Naju city official said, "With the launch of the monitoring committee, we hope to minimize conflicts and sustain a win-win development relationship through transparent information sharing as well as addressing environmental impacts caused by power plant operations."
