Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 4th that it held a regular meeting of the Child-Friendly City Creation Committee and the Child Rights Ombudsperson on the 2nd floor meeting room of the district office the day before.
The Child-Friendly City Creation Committee and the Child Rights Ombudsperson are cooperative bodies established this year for the creation of a child-friendly city and the promotion of children's rights.
At the meeting, they reviewed the selection of key projects for the four-year plan to promote a child-friendly city, and exchanged opinions on Gwangsan-gu's child-friendly policies, projects, and ways to enhance children's rights.
In particular, active discussions were held regarding the application for UNICEF Child-Friendly City certification.
A child-friendly city is a city where all children are fully guaranteed their rights by practicing the basic spirit of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child, and UNICEF evaluates related laws, child participation systems, budgets, and other items to decide on certification.
On this day, the committee members agreed to solidify child-friendly policies by consolidating the professional capabilities of the local community based on public-private cooperation and to promptly apply for child-friendly city certification.
Gwangsan-gu aims to obtain certification by the end of the year and plans to apply for UNICEF Child-Friendly City certification as early as this month.
Kim Gisuk, Deputy Mayor, stated, “Based on the good suggestions proposed at the regular meeting, we will make further efforts so that Gwangsan-gu can be reborn as a child-friendly city where children's rights are respected.”
