Collecting Field Opinions on Korean Language Corpus Construction
Yoo In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, met with artificial intelligence (AI) industry stakeholders on the 4th to hear their opinions on the Korean language corpus construction policy. He observed demonstrations of language models such as 'HyperCLOVA X (Naver)', 'ExaONE 2.0 (LG)', and 'Barco (NCSOFT)', the translation platform 'Flitto (Flitto)', and the AI learning service 'Tutoring AI (Tutors Labs)', and discussed ways to rapidly enhance the Korean language capabilities of Korean-style AI. Additionally, they sought solutions to protect the copyrights of works used in the generative AI learning process while advancing the AI industry.
Minister Yoo stated, "To protect data and cultural sovereignty in the global AI market, developing Korean-style AI technology that excels in the Korean language is of utmost importance," and promised, "We will promote Korean language corpus construction and copyright policies reflecting field opinions." He then urged AI industry stakeholders, "You are the guardians on the front lines protecting our culture and Korean language. Please devote your efforts to developing Korean-style AI."
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has already built and distributed sixty-five high-quality Korean language corpora containing Korean language characteristics since 2019. The plan is to expand this to 200 types by 2027.
