"Last year, property tax revenue decreased by 60 billion won. (However) this is a gesture prepared with a servant leadership attitude to express our gratitude to the taxpayers who have supported the financially strained district government."
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, Seoul, sent thank-you letters to 4,823 residents at the end of last month. Due to the decline in official land prices, property tax revenue dropped by as much as 60 billion won, making the autonomous district's budget tight, but this was meant to show appreciation to the residents who paid their taxes well despite the difficulties.
This year, Songpa-gu's local tax revenue decreased by 17.63% compared to last year. In this situation, diligent and high-paying taxpayers serve as a reliable pillar for the district's stable revenue and financial maintenance.
On the 30th of last month, the district office awarded commendations to 30 diligent and exemplary taxpayers. Fourteen of these taxpayers were invited in person to hear their suggestions and opinions. As a token of appreciation, they will be exempted from parking fees at public parking lots for one year and invited to various events hosted by the district to honor them.
The recipients of this commendation include 20 individuals and 10 corporations who have paid three or more local taxes annually without delinquency over the past three years or have paid more than 10 million won individually or 50 million won corporately in local taxes in the past year.
Mayor Seo said, "The projects we are pursuing are possible because of the sovereign citizens who pay their taxes exemplary," adding, "The taxes you have paid will be used as precious resources to improve the quality of life of the residents, who are the true owners of this land."
